This
Handbook is the result of part of the activities carried out by the
Education and Transference Program of the Patagonian Coastal Zone
Management Plan project of technical cooperation aimed at biodiversity
conservation.
This work is a complement of the Map on Natural Resources and Biodiversity
of the Patagonian Coast, from now on COASTAL BIODIVERSITY MAP, to
simplify the title. It is addressed to teachers working in the second
cycle of the Basic General Education (4th, 5th and 6th grades of elementary
schools) because natural resources and biodiversity issues are included
in the curricula suggested by the National Education authorities.
However, these issues can be adapted for other cycles.
The goals of this set, Map and book are the following:
Prompt the analysis and debate of “sustainable” use of
coastal resources.
Discuss environmental issues from a transversal approach.
Provide a classroom tool to analyze present knowledge on Patagonian
natural resources.
Promote among students the use of maps applied to natural resources.
Environmental Education is the transversal subject that incorporates
knowledge from different matters:
Geography, Natural Science, Mathematics, History, among others.
We define Environmental Education as the process addressed to individuals
or communities through which environmental friendly attitudes and
development of knowledge, skills and values to reach the sustainable
use of natural resources are expected to achieve. It is participatory
and requires a multidisciplinary approach to be able to address the
complex environmental issues.

The methodology of Projects is a way to integrate different areas
of knowledge and facilitates its comprehension. In this case, the
example was taken from the Patagonian Fisheries Sector. Patagonian
Fishing activities are at the top of the social, political and economical
discussion at present in our country and directly affects biodiversity.
On the other hand, schools do not obtain enough information on this
matter.
In the Coastal Biodiversity Map, spatial data can be found. These
data organize, analyze and describe updated information of the main
identified problems related to Patagonian Coastal Biodiversity.
Furthermore, the Map shows and synthesizes part of the research carried
out by the Project Patagonian Coastal Zone Management Plan. This project
was developed by Fundación Patagonia Natural (FPN) and Wildlife
Conservation Society (WCS) between 1993 and 1996. FPN is a non-governmental
organization (NGO) that has been realizing conservation projects in
the areas of investigation, management and environmental education
for the last ten years.
The teacher will find here, a sound proposal to develop projects through
all their different stages, models of didactical resources to facilitate
reflection and discussion of different issues and specific information
related to biodiversity, besides a glossary and recommended bibliography. |
